2012 Western Riverina Tennis Championships

Good Friday 6th April will see the start of the Western Riverina Tennis Championships at the Deniliquin Lawn Tennis Club. This 4 day event that was first held in 1939 looks like attracting 250 players plus judging by acceptances to date.

Events are Open knock-out for men and woman with similar comps for A, B and C graded players in both singles and doubles. Additionally there are round robin events for A, B and C graded players in doubles on Sunday and Monday and Veteran events (over 45 years) on Easter Saturday.

The schedule of events can be checked on the club portal www.denitennis.com.au

There are also junior events for age groups U14 and U16 years in girls and boys. Local junior players are asked to nominate for the junior that are to be played on Good Friday.

The round robin events acceptances are open until the day of the competition. Entry forms and other details can be obtained from Rockets Sports Power in Napier Street.

The 4 day event enjoys strong sponsorship which provides cash prizes for the winners. Deniliquin Lawn Tennis Club particularly appreciate the support of Herron Todd White local valuers, Rockets Sports Store and Deniliquin Newsagency.

Junior events are sponsored by Bulmers Cabinet Makers and Skintergrity.

Last years Open Mens winner Mitch Bengough from Melbourne has again nominated to defend his title this year. However he shall not have it all his own way with locals, Joel Smith, Barry Barlow and Dean Stubley thinking they are chances in this open event.

Dean Irwin will team-up with Joel Smith to see if they can recover their title in the Open Mens doubles. Irwin and Smith have won the event 4 times in the past couple of years and will be seeded first. Paul Luke from Melbourne will team up with local Barry Barlow in the event also & stand a good chance as former winners.

The Easter tournament draws a lot of locals to the Club watching the high standard of tennis that is on show in the autumn sun shine from great vantage points and excellent canteen and bar facilities. Watching the tennis from the vantage of the first floor veranda is a great way to spend a few hours over the Easter long weekend.

Social events will be held with the visitors on Saturday evening and on Sunday evening.
